As most of you know, there was a Category 2 hurricane in the Florida Keys on
Sept. 25th, with winds well over one hundred miles per hour. Hurricane Georges
(note the French spelling) also caused great destruction and took lives in
the Carribean before hitting the mainland of the United States. In
the Keys there was a lot of damage, but no deaths or injuries. As for
"Smear" Headquarters, there was very little damage at all, though
some houses and houseboats nearby were severely hurt. And of course the
electric power was off throughout the area for several days.
"Smear" is printed at a shop 22 miles north of Key West, and in that area the damage from flooding was quite considerable. Our last issue went off the press just before the hurricane began, but was locked in the closed print shop thereafter. The issue would have been unavailable for about two weeks had it not been for a gallant rescue by non-subscriber Jack Bennett, who lives nearby. Immediately after the hurricane he went to the shop, found the owner, and took "Smear" to his own badly damaged house, where he kept it till your editor was able to come by & pick it up. The photo at left shows Bennett standing amid hurricane debris in front of his home on Sugarloaf Key, 20 miles north of Key West.
Our sincere thanks to Jack Bennett, who has been given a free lifetime non-subscription to "Smear"...
Because of the hurricane, your editor canceled his planned attendance at the Project Awareness Space Coast UFO Conference, which took place Oct. 9th-llth in Cocoa Beach, Florida, near Cape Kennedy. We had been looking forward to this convention, which featured Whitley Strieber, Stanton Friedman, and other "Biggies" of the UFO field. Project Awareness, more than any other group, really knows how to put together a Con!
The above story is so ludicrous that it is below the high standards of "Smear". However, we have now come across a story slightly less ludicrous and equally entertaining. It seems that at John White's recent annual UFO convention in Connecticut, a father & son team named Bob and Ryan Wood gave an illustrated talk concerning a new batch of some 200 pages of MJ-12 type documents which surfaced a year or so ago. According to people who were present at the convention, some of the documents have obvious flaws, but others would take a vast amount of research to prove or disprove. The documents follow from the Eisenhower briefing document which, as noted in our last issue, William Moore presented to the public back in 1987. There were supposedly two crash sites, both near Roswell, and a massive cover-up thereafter.
One of the main people involved in this new MJ-12 affair is a very mysterious fellow from California named Tim Cooper, who is a private detective of some sort and a former Navy crypto expert. This man was described to us as a Todd Zechel type person - Zechel being the man who beguiled the UFO field many years ago with tales about crashed saucers, espionage, intrigue, etc. Some of his material checked out, and most of it didn't.
In our opinion there obviously is a very sophisticated group of hoaxters out there somewhere who are determined to make us believe that the Roswell Incident was interplanetary, in spite of overwhelming evidence to the contrary. Whether or not our friend William Moore is involved in this continuing effort, we do not know.
Interestingly, we asked long-time UFO document researcher Barry Greenwood what he thinks of this new batch of MJ-12-type documents, and he said in effect that they are not even worth investigating, since they basically come from an anonymous source ....
Now Story has contacted us in regard to a new, enlarged and updated version of his encyclopedia, which he is now starting to prepare, but which will not appear in print for another year or two. Anyone interested in helping out with this formidable task should contact Mr. Story at P.O. Box 58228, Seattle, Washington 98138-1228. He will send you a questionnaire and a list of instructions as to how you can be of help. (No money will change hands, however.)
The only fear is possible jealousy on the part of ufology's most famous encyclopedia writer, Jerry Clark, who clashed with Story at the time of his 1980 tome. (Long story here, - to make a cheap pun!) ...

Egads! ...
Here we have the usual stuff about secret government dealings with alien intelligence, Area 51, military use of alien technology, and of course the (alleged) UFO crash at Roswell. The tell-tale flaw in this work of art is mentioned right in the press release: "Because of the top-secret information in this book, parts have been fictionalized to protect the true identities of men and women involved in sensitive government programs, but episodes described in the book are based on actual events."
We just don't like science fiction! ...

"... As for Roswell, you wouldn't believe how many people got mad at me when I dared to opine that perhaps the extraterrestrial explanation might not be the best one anymore. No one, however - not one of them - took note of the fact that my statement derived from the fact that:"To clarify further, I still think the ET explanation remains valid as one of several possible explanations and that it is still worthy of further investigation and consideration. It's just that, in light of the large body of new evidence now in hand, I no longer think that it is necessarily the best of those several possible explanations. (Now watch them distort that one all out of shape!)
- It had always been my position from the very beginning that the UFO explanation was the best one based upon the evidence available to us at the time, and that
- If new evidence ever came to hand which caused me to rethink my position, I would say so publicly - which is exactly what I did.
"In addition, I continue to be troubled by those who feel I can shed further light on the MJ-12 affair when in fact there's really nothing more I can say about it that hasn't already been said, and several times over at that. Indeed, there are lots of questions about it that I wish I could answer, but alas, I cannot ...
"In your lead October article you state, 'Either Bill Moore had a hand in writing the (MJ-12) documents, or at the very least, he knows damn well who did!'"As you damn well know, the suspect documents are dated in a military/civilian-hybrid style identical to that used by Moore in his personal correspondence. If Moore was not involved, whoever did write them damn well mimicked Moore's idiosyncratic dating method. But for what possible reason? To falsely 'frame' Moore as a creator of bogus UFO documents? If so, no one with a vested interest in perpetuating the MJ-12 hoax (you name Friedman, Shandera and Doty) would damn well have written these documents.
Who's damn well left? Phil Klass?"
"Thanks for your reply, along with the copy of 'Saucer Smear'. Enjoyable reading! Please include me on your non-subscriber list as a person who can deal with Free Will Love Offerings appropriately. As you are probably aware, I am thoroughly disgusted with the circus atmosphere at the UFO Museum in Roswell..."
"...I had never before heard of Colman VonKeviczky, but there's nothing unusual about a former Nazi-puppet-state-officer managing to insinuate himself comfortably into a post-War career in the U.S. The entire U.S. post-War intelligence network - the C.I.A. and N.S.A. - was riddled with Eastern European Nazis, who were recruited wholesale at the end of the War precisely because they constituted an already-in-place intelligence network focusing on the Soviet Union."... VonKeviczky may well have been a nice and honorable guy, but his resume capitulates a sad fact of American history..."
"Sorry to be so tardy about replying to your letter. This happens a lot when I correspond with those who are computer-challenged. I know that I must get my printer set up, dig up an envelope and a stamp, etc. By comparison, those with whom I correspond on-line get responses pretty damn fast, because all I need to do is to push a few buttons."I was delighted to see your review of my new book, 'UFO Sightings'. It's encouraging when someone as wise as you (well, OK, experienced) sees the merit in my writing. Prometheus claims to have sent out lots of review copies, although I don't see any evidence of that ...
"Thank you for sending me the July 10th issue of 'Saucer Smear'. I appreciate support from all quarters."My case is a frame-up and a smear tactic to destroy my UFO organization and to neutralize my effectiveness.
"The main reason I'm sitting here is due to the fact that I had information indicating that the 1995 East End Forest Fires had been deliberately set to cover up the crash of a large disc near Suffolk Community College, south of Riverhead (Long Island). The County was asked to set fires near the crash site, to keep people out of the area; but dirty politics being the case, the Republican leadership, in an effort to gain control of Pine Barrens properties, set Forest Fires South of Sunrise Highway in populated areas near the coveted land. I was able to document some of this. While doing so, I was targeted for elimination by the politicians. I had several attempts on my life fail, due to the intervention of Israeli intelligence, which protected me for some 3 1/2 months.
"Yes, it's true what I said. There is a heavy intelligence presence involved in my case. The man to talk to about it all is Preston Nichols. ... He can give you a briefing on the various aspects of the case ..."
"...I ought to have mentioned a few months more promptly that I'm in entire agreement with your statement in your 3/l/98 letter: 'There is some sort of "other realm" out there which breaks through into ours occasionally, but not often enough to really upset our civilization - so that people who want to deny its reality are - for all practical purposes, quite justified in doing so.' I thoroughly agree with that view. But isn't this a strange situation? Since the other-worldly entities are able to perform what we call miracles, they could intervene so effectively in human history as to shape it just as they please - but they don't. Their rulers (?), or the rules of the 'game' they're playing, forbid them to take any unquestionably concrete action, and limit them to influencing human history only psychologically - by the actions of people who have been convinced by their manifestations...."How frustrating it must be to be a perpetrator of these eldritch pranks! Only a pitifully small proportion of them ever get publicized; the vast majority never have any effect on anyone but the original witness. Great and ingenious efforts must have gone into producing all these 'quasi-real' phenomena - yet, almost invariably, wasted efforts.... It would seem that they must get so much enjoyment out of watching our reaction to their 'shows' (spiritualism, UFOS, etc.), that they feel our responses to these 'Productions' are rewarding enough to justify their great complexity and expense."
"I felt you might be interested to know that we are experiencing a major UFO flap if the data of the National UFO Reporting Center can be trusted. As of the 26th of September, there were 108 reports covering 80 incidents. This is the heaviest month in the Center's files, and is a rate about ten times the average rate since January 1996. This bears comparison with the monthly totals found in the flaps of the Project Blue Book years. I trust most people will agree this is a curious development given the public disenchantment and disinterest in our subject of the past year or so. I, for one, was delighted by this unsurprising turn of events and would be interested in your reaction."Our reaction is that this "flap" (?) is long overdue and badly needed indeed, if we are going to keep the UFO subject alive! However, we were totally unaware of this "flap" till Martin brought it to our attention, and we fear the same is true for most people! - Editor.
You may recall about a year ago... I told you that there was an event, a threatening terrible event occured to my family, which I could not tell you about. Because of that event, and a succession of other events, what you're listening to right now, is my final broadcast on the air. This is it folks, I'm going off the air and will not return. And what I will tell you now is what I told you then. When the time comes when I can tell you what occurred, I will tell you, through the press, through the media, of one sort or the other. I will explain to you the entire thing, it's not that I want to hold anything back from my audience, however, for the protection of my family, until it is otherwise revealed, I can't discuss it, I won't discuss it. And if you were in my position, you would do exactly the same thing. And when you finally hear whatever it is, what it is, whenever you hear it, I think you will then understand. At any rate, I wanted to tell you, I didn't want to go without saying a word, so I'm telling you now. What you are listening to, is MY FINAL BROADCAST. It's been a good run, and you've been a great audience, and it's been an absolutely incredible forum. And my presumption is, that the forum will continue, At any rate, it certainly is my hope, that the forum will continue.
And again when the time comes, when this information can be released, you can be sure that I will release it, and I would assume because of the magnitude of the forum that I have held, at that time, you'll get the whole story. But the time will come when I will tell it.
So for now and the forseeable future, that's it! That's the end of this man's broadcast career. So, thank you, and goodbye...
