"Smear" has obtained a "revised chapter outline and synopsis" of this book, and it is quite fantastic. MJ-l2, the Roswell alien autopsy video, and other well-known matters related to the alleged Roswell crash are mentioned in passing. However, Corso's main thrust is the fact that, beginning in 1961, under his direction and that of other highly placed officers, the alien artifacts obtained at Roswell were made available to American private industry, resulting in a gigantic advantage to our country in many fields of technology. These include today's miniature electric circuits & components used in our computers and in our space probes; laser technology, including "Star Wars"; fiber optics; and several other areas of research & development.
It is not explained why the military waited till 1961, and why the Russians didn't benefit from similar UFO crashes (if any) in their territory. However, this is intriguing material from an officer said to have an impeccable background, and we need someone with a similar background who is capable of confirming or refuting Corso's claims. More on this in our next issue.
The leader of the cult is believed to be a man named Marshall Applewhite, who founded a similar cult in about 1975, together with a woman named Bonnie Nettles, who later died of natural causes. In those days, they were called Bo and Peep, or "The Two". Now they are called Do and Ti, for some reason. We of "Smear" remember "The Two" from the l97Os. They wore matching uniforms and were supposed to be highly evolved space beings of some sort.
Public belief in the existence of a "SLO" following Hale-Bopp came about in recent months in a complex way, involving "remote viewing" and a misleading photograph of a supposed mystery objact in the sky near the comet. The object, which was actually a star, was thought by a great many Internet fans to be a spaceship! We have commented on this in past issues of our zine. (Higher Source has a website called "Heaven's Gate", but the comet was also discussed on many other websites.)
At the recent Gulf Breeze convention, UFO lecturer Courtney Brown explained to his audience that his latest remote viewing shows that the SLO is no longer following Hale-Bopp, but is now in another part of the sky, behind the sun. If the cult members had known this soon enough, they might still be alive! (Our thanks to Tim Brigham for some of this material.)
It is human nature to consider oneself immortal, even if one isn't. Walt Andrus, who has been called "the Saddam Hussein of the UFO Field", faces the same problem that every great leader of the past and present faces - the fact of his own mortality. The super-hero called The Phantom solved the problem by having his successors dress in the same mask and costume, thus fooling the ignorant natives into thinking he was the same guy over a period of hundreds of years. But would anyone want to look at a clone of Walt Andrus over that long a period of time? We think not!
More seriously - many of the irreplacable files of both APRO and NICAP, in the ufological past, were lost forever when their respective leaders left the scene. This obviously was because of lack of planning. We would hate to see the same thing happen to MUFON, and we sincerely hope that it does not.
Speakers included Travis Walton and Mike Rogers, two of the seven witnesses to Walton's famous 1975 alleged abduction by a low-flying saucer. We had never met Walton before, and we never read his book, though we did see the movie. Everyone agrees that the movie scenes aboard the spacecraft are purely imaginary - deliberately made different from other abduction stories, just to be different! But what we hadn't realized till now was how much was seen of the Walton abduction by the other six men. IF this is true, there may be a stronger case here than in the better-known Betty & Barney Hill abduction. The Walton story is said to have convinced a CSICOP-type skeptic named Jerry Black of its authenticity We don't know if this is true or not.
Mike Rogers spoke very well, and seemed comfortable with his story.
Travis Walton was somewhat ill at ease, and obviously not pleased at having
to cater to the public, as in his book-signing obligation photographed at
the right. In the picture, Walton is on the left and Rogers is at the right.
Another speaker whom we heard for the first time was pseudo-astronaut Doctor Brian O'Leary, who came across as a typically spacy New Ager. Still another first for us was England's Nick Pope - he being a middle-level bureaucrat with the British Ministry of Defence who spent three years at their "saucer desk", and acquired a moderately sane interest in the UFO phenomenon.
Most of all, we wanted to hear Dr. Courtney Brown, whom we have "trashed" in our past two issues. He did not foam at the mouth, but his Scientific Remote Viewing still does not impress us favorably. (Says Brown, "I may be deluded, but I'm working hard at it!") As stated earlier in this issue, Brown could have done us all a favor by not taking so long to abandon his belief that a spaceship is following Hale-Bopp!
The other speakers included Stanton Friedman ( = same old thing!), Whitley Strieber ( = moderately interesting), and Larry Warren of Bentwaters fame, together with his co-author Peter Robbins. Larry Warren was actually pleased with the somewhat unfavorable review we gave his book in our last issue, and he presented us with a free autographed copy of the hardcover edition. (We had seen only the "proofs" till then.) What a guy!
Our thanks to Tim Brigham of "The Devil's Advocate" for free psychological and spiritual counseling during the Convention!
"I don't know if I'm on the track of alien contact or not. I don't even care. I know that I'm on the trail of something unknown that's important because it has to do with the human mind and the way we view ourselves."
Whitley Strieber
One, from the March 6th Boston Herald, concerns an elderly woman from Colebrook, New Hampshire, who claims she was visited by twelve aliens who sat at her table, took notes, whispered among themselves, and wouldn't leave until 3:30 a.m., in spite of polite requests to do so. "I just want to forget about it. It was very disturbing", said the 73-year-old woman, who is not named in the article.
The other item is from the Israeli newspaper "Maariv", dated around Jan. 19th. On the night of Dec. 29th, 1996, Daoud Ahmad was asleep in his bedroom at the Nur-a-Shamat camp on the West Bank. When he awoke and tried to get out of bed, two creatures about two feet tall jumped on him and beat him up! The creatures had only one eye, large heads, and a single stripe of hair across their bald heads. Ahmad was taken to a local hospital, where he was treated for seven severe bruises to his face! (Our thanks to Bill LaParl)....
The book, called "UFOs Are Real: Here's the Proof", is an Avon paperback, and is Ed's third published work. We are astounded that Dr. Maccabee has signed on as co-author, though his reputation for scientific objectivity is not likely to decrease any further than it already has.
All that know us are aware of the fact that, though we like Ed Walters, we have never believed that his Gulf Breeze photos and videos are genuine. Apparently Bruce Maccabee is of the opposite opinion. The book includes photos and sighting reports up to the present time, from Gulf Breeze and elsewhere, as reported by many people other than Ed. In this regard the book provides an interesting historical record. Buy this book!...
We haven't had time to read all of this, but it looks very interesting, and can be obtained from the Human Potential Foundation, P.O. Box 6, Falls Church, Va. 22040-0006....
"Thank you for offering to print any response I might have to the latest Todd/Klass tempest in a teapot. This thing has all the earmarks of yet another of their famous hatchet jobs, since neither made any effort whatsoever to contact me for information or comment while in the process of writing their material. Typical."All I can say is that I am growing weary of these seemingly incessant and generally vicious attempts to get me to confess to something which I DID NOT DO and about which I know very little more than my esteemed, howbeit self-anointed critics. If - and I emphasize IF - any of the UFO-related documents cited by me in past writings are fabrications (a matter which I have always conceded to be within the bounds of possibility),then I was just as much taken in and used as anyone else if not more.
"With respect to this latest controversy (a 1947 draft of a data collection memorandum associated with General Schulgen), I cannot imagine why anyone would want to take the trouble to fabricate such a document, since it proves absolutely nothing with respect to Roswell and since what little suggestive material it does contain can so easily be interpreted in an entirely different context, i.e., Mogul, etc. Had I indeed fabricated this document, does it not seem strange that I would then bother to cite it only once in all of my writings (in a 1986 paper replying to certain allegations by Klass) and then never make reference to it again?
"IF indeed this particular document is a fabrication (again please stress IF), then the list of those potentially responsible is rather short. Aside from myself, this would include Jaime Shandera, Stanton Friedman, Bruce Maccabee, Edwin Reece (sp?) of the National Archives, Richard Doty and his superiors, and possibly even Robert Todd himself or one (some?) of his confederates. Effective arguments could certainly be made in each and every case.
"Given the above, those who allege that documents have been fabricated should give careful consideration as to why anyone would do such a thing and who, among those listed above, has made the most use of this controversial material over the years for purposes of personal gain.
"In closing, the only thing I am convinced of is that IF there is a guilty party, it certainly isn't me. Indeed, perhaps the most likely suspect in this whole brouhaha is one other than Bob Todd's best friend, Mr. Al K. Hall, who has been the eminence grise behind similar outbursts in the past."
"This is another one I can't let go by: For Bill Moore to put Phil Corso in the same category as Al Bielek or Bill Cooper is utter nonsense. He obviously has not taken even the most cursory look at Corso's background. I have. In depth. Phil Corso is exactly who he says he is. Unlike the others previously mentioned, Corso has come forward twice before and told remarkable tales. Both proved to be true. These were not presented in some bullshit publication. Rather, he presented the evidence before the U.S. Congress."His testimony in both 1993 and 1996 was covered by major media (network TV, U.S. News & World Report, Newsweek, etc.) Face it - in round one he exposed a war that had gone on for decades, but almost no one knew about it. The second was an extensive POW exploitation effort conducted by the KGB for almost 50 years. Also note that it was Corso who provided the outside world with information about `Project Horizon'. It seems that NASA used a classified U.S. Army plan that already existed to put men on the moon. Phil Corso got that declassified and released. (Have Bielek or Cooper done anything approaching what Corso has proven?)
"I have conducted an extensive background check on Corso. He holds together at above 95%. That does not prove his story to be true. I agree with George Knapp, through whom I met Corso, that it will be very difficult to confirm or deny what he has to say about UFOs. I have tried. Very senior officers say he should not be dismissed. However, they state they cannot (NOT WILL NOT) confirm his story about crash material, even though some should have been in a position to do so. As anyone who has met Phil will agree, he is a fine gentleman. In his 80's, his mind is sharp as a tack. While we need confirmation of the events he reports, Phil Corso has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is no "bullshit artist''
"In regard to Bill Moore's characterization of my views on Col. (Lt. Col.) Corso, while there's no doubt- in my mind that Corso is lying through his teeth about his knowledge of and daring do concerning Roswell, alien technologies, etc., I wouldn't put him in the same class as Al Bielek or Bill Cooper, each of whom is in a class by himself. We can't wait till the Corso book comes out! - Editor"My investigations and those of others leave no doubt Corso held the military and National Security Council positions he has claimed, was stationed when and where he says he was, etc, It's the other, far more interesting stuff that's bogus.
"Corso is Frank Kaufmann or Bob Dean with credentials."
"Thanks very much for your kind words, which, as you well know, are richly undeserved."I can't wait to be finished with the UFO subject. Right now, I'm just waiting for the fat lady to sing at the Roswell opera house."
"All praise to Bob Todd for his first-class expose of the fake Schulgen `Collection Memorandum' documents of late 1947. It is a pity it was not done years ago, but we should all be grateful that he has done it at all."Apart from FUFOR, who certainly ought to have red faces after Todd's devastating demolition job (Fancy submitting phoney documents to Congress to bolster their case for Congressional hearings, even if it was done in good faith!), there are others who will have some egg on their faces as well. These include Timothy Good, in both his tomes; Stan Friedman (of course); Bruce Maccabee, who had a lot to say about the documents in FUFOR's 1987 collection of papers; and also Michael D. Swords, who contributed a 30-page paper to the 1991 CUFOS publication `The Roswell Report'. This paper was centered around the Schulgen Memo.
"Perhaps Todd's expose will finally kill off the idea constantly floated about by Roswell believers that the USAF was seriously interested in the ETH angle as early as October 1947. After all, it was this theme (the supposed AF interest in ETH) that was advanced to back up the dotty idea that the USAF had actually recovered a crashed saucer at Roswell but were carefully concealing the fact, whilst dropping ever so subtle hints in certain documents about it! The whole thesis is now shown to be totally baseless!...
"Let Roswell enjoy its Festival. Then perhaps we can (thankfully) let the whole affair die in peace. All the recent evidence indicates that its death cannot be long delayed now."
"American ufology is very odd. Many years ago, when no important evidence about UFOs had yet surfaced, debunkers did not exist, except those in the U.S. Government. Then, after the USAF closed Project Blue Book, several UFO debunkers appeared as if by magic, such as Klass and others, in particular with the coming of UFO abduction reports.
"Some years later, when the Roswell Incident was known, a veritable gang of UFO debunkers rose from nothing, and from a dunghill for at least one of them, who is living in cowflop.
"Now there are several so-called UFO bulletins which have become the spokesmen for these UFO debunkers, Indeed, they prefer dishonesty and insults to bona fide information, such as that obtained from the Russian scientist Dr. Valery Burdakov regarding Joseph Stalin, who was informed about the bodies found in the crash at Roswell in 1947. (I have a video K7 with his statement.)
"All this is rather sad, Jim, particularly coming from you. .."
"Dear Friend (?) Jim:"Since I became a `black lamb' and was expelled from your `Saucer Smear', I lost my control on your frustrating UFO memory on my 3 decades long activity with the Member Nations within the United Nations Secretariat. In your January 10th, 1997 issue, you were qualified my activity at the United Nations Secretariat as a private picture-hunter photographer, somewhere in the basement - near to the mens room, where the `great' UFO researchers referred to the cleaning woman, how the Secretary General should solve the UFO global problem.
"Upon the enclosed copies of original as evidences, I am requesting your IMMEDIATE ATTENTION FOR PUBLIC CORRECTION in your next issue, that over three years I was a Staff Member of the United Nations Secretariat, Office of Public Information, Radio and Audio Visual Division, Photo-Exhibit and Archives Department. The Chef de Cabinet C.V. Narasimhan's letter on May 12, 1966 proves without any doubt that I was assigned personally by Secretary General U Thant to elaborate the first UN-UFO Project!! - Regarding our 'endless petitions' slightly positive results', we hit your `Saucer Smear' Commandership with the U.S. National Security Council and President Bill Clinton's super positive confirmations and acceptance of our activity!!
"Finally I am very very sorry to mention that on November 1992, the NEW Hungarian Republic's Ministry of Defense Rehabilitation Committee - represented by 16 members of Parliamentary Parties - in consideration of my four decades of SUCCESSFUL ACTIVITY as Military Scientist in the Intergalactic Forces analytical research, granted me as a former Royal Hungarian Major, the rank of Retired COLONEL...."
Editor's Note: There are two major issues here:
So Colman is correct on both these points, and we apologize. He is not a "black lamb" or even (more correctly) a "black sheep", in our opinion. Colman has made a unique contribution to ufoology over the years, and we wish him well!
"I just received the most recent issue of `Saucer Smear', I see that George Earley thinks we should send in our picks for best and worst UFO books of all time. My subjective picks:
- "Best UFO book: `UFOs Explained', by Klass.
- "Worst UFO book: `The UFO Controversy in America', by Jacobs.
- "Best UFO fiction book: `The Mothman Prophecies', by Keel.
- "Worst UFO fiction: `Chariots of the Gods', by Daniken..."
"Just a note to tell you how much I enjoyed your latest non-issue of `Smear'. I wish you well on your forthcoming book; Even without seeing it, I know you will raise a lot of blood pressures. ...
Hopefully! - editor
Psychiatrist Faces Malpractice Suit
Appleton, Wis.(AP)-- A woman is suing her former psychiatrist for malpractice, claiming he convinced her she had 120 personalities - and then charged her insurance company for group therapy.
Nadean Kool testified Monday that the $300,000 treatment by Dr. Kenneth Olson left her suicidal and haunted by false memories. Her supposed personalities included a duck, Satan and angels who talked to God.
